Eligibility Requirements Deadline Application
Josephine Lavey was a dedicated member of the Order Sons
of Italy since 1947.She served as Grand Administrative Secretary and
Recording Secretary for the Ontario Grand Lodge from 1951 until her death
in April 1973. She was also the first member of the Order in Canada to be
elected to the Supreme Council of Order Sons of Italy in America as a
trustee.
Her area of jurisdiction as National Regional Deputy included the Grand
Lodges of Ontario, Quebec, California, Nevada and the Northwestern
States. She was the founder and the First Venerable of the Regina Lodge in
Welland and one of the organizers of the Latina Lodge in Thorold.
Besides her work for the Order, she was the Deputy Treasurer for the City
of Welland. Her untiring efforts on behalf of the Italian immigrants stand
out as her greatest contribution to the community. She worked
indefatigably to find employment, to interpret, to translate and assist
newcomers in their desire to achieve Canadian Citizenship. All her life,
Josephine Lavey served others, her family, community and other
organizations. She served on the Board of Directors for YMCA and the
National Institute for the Blind, and as well, as President of St. Mary's
CWL to mention a few.
Josephine also had the distinction of being the only Canadian present at
the meeting of the International Executive of OSIA with U.S. president
Richard Nixon at the White House. The Order Sons of Italy, in its 80 years
of existence has performed public service of incalculable value to its
members and to the country, all the while battling continually to achieve
social justice and individual dignity for all.
Thc Order Sons of Italy, as a fraternal organization, continues to make
great contributions towards the betterment of social conditions in society
offering true helping hands wherever and whenever they are needed. One of
the inspiring and unifying influences has been the general effort to
gather for the Thalassemia and Kidney Foundations. Various local lodges
donate thousands of dollars each year in their respective communities to
local hospitals and charities, and all lodges, in various degrees support
the annual United Way Campaign, allocate funds to and scholarships, and a
wide number of community services.
The Sons of Italy has, as its noble purpose, to keep alive and protect the
many rich traditions of our enviable Italian heritage. To this end, the
Order contributes scholarships to seven universities encouraging the
teaching of Italian language and promotes Italian speaking contests among
youths of our communities. The Order Sons of Italy was first established
at Sault Ste. Marie in 1915 as a Mutual Benefit Society, to provide
financial help and protection to Italian immigrants. It thus played a very
important part in the lives of early immigrants providing material and
spiritual support in times of illness, accident and death. At the same
time, the Order served as social and recreational centres.
At first, only persons of Italian origin made up the Order Sons of Italy.
Because of many marriages of Italians with non-Italians, now membership is
open to persons of Italian birth or descent, or married to a person of
Italian birth or descent, regardless of religious faith or political
affiliations. The Order's fundamental concept, its philosophy, as
contained in the purpose clause of its Constitution, is simple. It
contains three themes: Belief in God, the Brotherhood of man and
Government by law.
Currently, there are 15 Lodges in Canada: over 3000 Lodges in the U.S.A,
Bermuda and Hawaii. It is the largest Fraternal Order of Canadians and
Americans of Italian origin.
